Architectuur begint met een vraag naar een ruimtelijke behoefte, noodzaak of een verlangen.

Het beantwoorden van deze vraag begint met een idee, vastgelegd in een eerste schets en daarmee verbeeld. Die verbeelding maakt het idee grijpbaar en bespreekbaar. In mijn werk ben ik mij continu bewust dat de in een ontwerp gemaakte keuzes invloed hebben op de gebruikers. Immers, iedere oplossing verandert het natuur- of cultuurlandschap en de ruimtelijke kwaliteit heeft invloed op het gedrag van de gebruikers. Dat vraagt een grote zorgvuldigheid van de architect.

Architectuur heeft voor mij twee kanten: een rationele en een irrationele. Ik vind allereerst dat architectuur zo functioneel moet zijn dat het als een ‘machine’ of een ‘organisme’ werkt. Aan de andere kant is het fascinerende van architectuur juist dat het creatieve proces ongrijpbaar is en gebaseerd op intuïtie, herinneringen en ervaring.

Als een in Istanbul geschoolde architect heb ik in deze context ook mijn eigen weg gekozen. Ik ben begonnen met mij te verdiepen in de daar alom aanwezige historie en het (her)waarderen hiervan door restauratie. Want architectuur vormt een belangrijk deel van een collectieve herinnering. Naar mijn mening is het verleden de basis van het heden, dat richting geeft aan vandaag en zo de toekomst vormt. Mijn interesse ligt vooral in het opsporen van die irrationele dimensie van architectuur en zelfs duurzaamheid in historische gebouwen. Hierom streef ik ernaar juist de culturele waarden te verwerken in hedendaagse en eigentijdse oplossingen.

In my work I am continually aware of the impact which the choices made in a design will have on its users. After all, every solution changes the natural and cultural landscape, and the quality of a space affects the behaviour of those using it. This demands a great deal of care and precision on the part of the architect.

For me, architecture has two sides: the rational and the irrational. First of all, I believe that architecture must be so functional that it works like a 'machine' or an 'organism'. On the other hand, the fascinating thing about architecture is precisely that the creative process is intangible and based on intuition, memories and experience.

As an architect trained in Istanbul, I have chosen my own path within this context. I began by immersing myself in the city's ubiquitous history and by valuing (or re-valuing) it through restoration. For architecture forms an important part of one's collective memory: in my view, the past is the foundation for the present, it gives direction to today and so forms the future. My interest lies mainly in tracing this irrational dimension of architecture and, further, the sustainability of historical buildings. For this very reason I aim to transform cultural values into contemporary and current solutions.
